In Memory

Kevin Clements

Kevin Clements

Kevin Charles Clements passed away on June 30, 2022 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was 59 years old. He was the younger of two sons of Gene and Wanda (Elmore) Clements.

Although he was born in California, Kevin spent his growing-up years in Maryland. He graduated from Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Maryland and then attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He graduated with a B.S. in Psychology, and he planned for a career as a college professor and researcher. During the summer, he earned money for college as a door-to-door book salesman. He didn’t realize it then, but his business skills would be put to use later in life.

Kevin pursued graduate studies at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts, where he met his future wife, Melody. He earned an M.A. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience & Behavior. He handled the typical workload for a graduate student, and in order to earn some extra money, he created software for his professors to use to conduct research and tutor students.

Next, Kevin moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to join the Biology department at the University of Nebraska as a postdoctoral researcher. He conducted research in Game Theory and managed a local-area network that was needed for research. He also started working part-time as a software developer for Pen-Link, Ltd.

Kevin made the leap from academia to the corporate world when he joined Pen-Link as a full-time employee. Though this was not part of his original career plan, he was happy with his decision because Pen-Link was such a challenging and fun place to work. This was where all of Kevin’s skills were put to use. He served in a number of roles during his 27 years there, and he retired in 2021 as Senior Vice President of Business Development.

Kevin’s hobby was trap shooting. He was a member of the teams “Five All” at Lincoln Trap & Skeet and “Rock Busters” at the Lincoln Izaak Walton League. He became head coach of the Lincoln Southeast Trap team in 2017. His goal was to help middle and high-school-aged youth enjoy the sport and to serve as a mentor to them. He also incorporated his tech knowledge into the sport. He was happy to reprise the role of software developer, but this time for fun. During his retirement, he created software, including trapapp, that was used to conduct youth trap meets throughout Nebraska.

Kevin was a loving husband and father, and his family’s well-being was always foremost in his mind. Even though his work life was incredibly demanding, he was invariably there for his family whenever they needed him. He always made time to attend his daughter’s events, from piano recitals and volleyball games, to theater productions and art show openings. He planned wonderful vacations, which often included extended family and friends. Recently, some of his happiest times were weekly family dinners, where he would tell his amazing, humorous stories.

His family, friends, and co-workers remember him for his keen intellect, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and generous spirit. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all.

He is survived by Melody Albert, his wife of 26 years, and his daughter, Dana Clements, of Lincoln, Nebraska; his brother, Christopher Clements, and niece, Katie (Logan) VanSickel, of California; his aunt, Patricia Quigley, of California, and numerous relatives and friends.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers for a service, please consider making a donation to the Lincoln Southeast Trap Team Parent-Booster Club (a non-profit organization), that will benefit youth trapshooting at the Lincoln Izaak Walton League.  Donations can be made at any Union Bank Branch or by mailing them to Lori Oden-Muth, Treasurer, 4205 Brandon Blvd., Roca, NE 68430, or Aaron Svik, Director, 2930 S 37th St., Lincoln, NE 68506; or to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org; or to a charity of your choice.
